How long does it take to learn German?

Most learners reach a confident B1, the level required for many German work and nursing routes, in about 7 to 9 months of consistent classes and daily practice. A1 and A2 each take roughly 1.5 months, while B1 and B2 need a little longer. Which German level do you need for Germany?

Different goals need different levels. Here is how the German you learn maps to the most common routes to Germany:

• Study in Germany: most German-taught university programmes expect B2 to C1, while many public universities charge little or no tuition. Start early so your language level is ready before application deadlines.
• Skilled work and the EU Blue Card: qualified professionals with a job offer can move on the EU Blue Card. German at B1 or B2 makes you far more employable and helps you settle in faster.
• Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte): this points-based job-seeker route lets qualified professionals come to Germany to look for work, and German language skills add valuable points.
• Ausbildung (vocational training): paid training programmes usually ask for B1 to B2 German and come with a monthly training allowance, across fields such as nursing, hospitality, IT and engineering trades.
• Nurses and healthcare workers: recognition of your qualification in Germany generally requires B1 to B2, often through the TELC Deutsch B1 or B2 Pflege exam, which we prepare you for specifically.
